The Faces of the Salinas Homeless.

2,047

A number that could mean anything. 2,047 water bottles. 2,047 cats. 2,047 books. But in Monterey County, a coastal area that encompasses King City to Seaside, that number is attached to 2,047 faces, but not 2,047 homes.

 

There are 2,047 homeless people in Monterey County according to a local census, and the first step to helping them is to try and see them beyond a numerical figure.

I spent a couple of months in the Chinatown Navigation Center getting to know the homeless people in a neighborhood called Chinatown in Salinas, hearing their stories, serving food and working the front desk. Five homeless people agreed to talk with me about how they got to the Navigation Center and started from the beginning of their lives.
